Hey guys!
Today I worked on a fun, yet critical part of my planning process, my storyboard! Now you may be thinking what is the purpose of a storyboard when you have the script? Well, storyboards can help make your dialogue and written scenes come to life as it lets you visualize exactly what you want in each scene. Key aspects like the type of shot, camera movement, actors, dialogue and sound are all considered in this process. Through this, you can roughly draw out what you want your audience to see and take in. This way when I film, it'll be way easier figuring out the position of my actors and camera what's being said and when. It allows me to be much more organized and prepared.
To make sure I do this properly I went ahead and watched this Youtube video that gave a lot of insight on how storyboards are used and what you can add to give better detail about your shots.
Secondly, the storyboard helps me finalize what characters are gonna be in my film and what props I will utilize as well as my setting! When making my storyboard, I focused on drawing out scenes that I had written on my script in chronological order so it had a proper flow. By doing this I could also change around the order of some of my dialogue and shots to make my opening more effective.
In my storyboard I was able to depict three settings, a neighborhood, my main characters bedroom and the kitchen. In each of these settings a different message was meant to be shown to my audience. Here's a quick breakdown:
Neighborhood(Memory)- This scene is meant to show and build the romantic relationship of the main characters and express the happiness, youthfulness and love felt in both characters.
Bedroom- Here, the fears of the main character are illustrated as she gets scared and worried when her mother called for her while she was texting the love interest.
Kitchen- Family closeness is shown, as well as south asian culture through sublte props and sounds like a south asian drama playing on the TV as well as common foods seen and used like chai and Naan. Pressures and expectations reflected on the phone through Zara's conversation with her dad.
Visuals of Storyboard
To give a better picture here are some storyboards of each scene!
Neighborhood (Memory) Scenes:
In these neighborhood scenes I wanted to capture the proximity, closeness, vulnerability and deep romantic feels each both characters have with one another. Through these scenes as well I was able to highlight the feeling of a "first love". These scenes like swinging at the park, chasing after one another and doing small intimate things like holding hands show the innocence and youthfulness. And over all these scenes a soft piano instrumental will play and diegetic sounds like laughter, and minimal dialogue will be used. This can create a beautiful, nostalgic and emotional mood within my film and audience. Almost every shot taken here is handheld as I want to be able to mesmerize and intensify that genuine emotion, and take the audience along to be in the moment with the characters.
Bedroom-
As you can see in my storyboards I first wanted to get static shots of Zara's room as it gives insight to her character subtly, as in the first clip I show pictures of her and friends and props like a prayer mat to indirectly communicate her religion, Islam. I further introduced the love interest, "Noah" as Zara writes his name down. As for the main character this scene gets the audience a feel of Zara's imbalance of priorities as she stops what she's doing for school on the computer and takes time to respond to Noah instead. This builds upon the youthfulness shown in scene one.Kitchen-
Finally in our last scene, a look into Zara's family life can be seen as well as common south asian traditions and morals. I wanted this scene to reflect more of common south asian culture that is still seen in America within south asian households. In my personal life this consists of things like "chai" or tea which I make for my dad everyday as well as naan which we pair with many dishes. Through this scene I also wanted to show that Zara holds responsibility a respect for her parents, a common expectation and duty of south asian teens.
Reflection
This process was really fun as I finally got to think about how I wanted to create meaning and make my film come to life. After making my storyboard I would say I'm overall really confident with how it came out. This being said I hope It will make it right at or a little under the two minute mark. If not, I will have to make adjustments to better fit the given time slot! See you all next time!
